Balkavik

With their kaleidoscopic fusion of Balkan-folk fervour, jazz-inflected exuberance and cinematic theatricality, Brussels quartet Balkavik transport you into an evening dance in a moon-lit Transylvanian square. On their 2024 release Fluture de Noapte, pianist-composer Victor Abel recruits violin, accordion and double-bass to conjure a world where Tim Burton’s gothic whimsy and Emir Kusturica’s exuberant chaos meet over clinking glasses and pounding rhythms. With music inspired by Moldavian, Bulgarian and Romanian traditions, Balkavik craft an instrumental narrative that is at once playful, dark, unpredictable, and utterly alive.
